Paper E2½: Type and Degree (Draft)
The first grade change — the gap between the generator-inversions (the lie, the vessel) and the bivector-vices (cowardice, excess, sloth-and-overwork). It is tempting to read it as one thing — the refused shock, the coherence-input the inverted octave never receives, so the virtue-bivector never forms. That reading is correct, but it is only the mild end of the interval. The same gap runs the whole way down to active dereliction and the willful direction toward evil, and the distance between the two ends is measurable on two axes the mathematics already supplies — type and degree — plotted here, with the three vices traced down the slope.
Confidence — Math: derivation — the slope plotted on two orthogonal axes the math supplies: type (omission → commission — a withheld wedge vs a wedge actively oriented against others) and degree (small → catastrophic — amplitude × continuity × scope); the small omission and the great atrocity differ by type and degree, not kind. Two axes, not one point
A vice is not a point; it is a region, and the interval is the slope across it. Two quantities fix a position on that slope.
Type — omission to commission. At the passive end, the vice is the virtue-bivector not formed: the wedge withheld, the coherence-shock refused or unavailable, the good-act simply absent. Algebraically it is a zero — V = eᵢ ∧ eⱼ left unactualized. By E2 it has no vessel and so builds nothing; it is privation by absence, and it decays. At the active end, the will does not merely fail to wedge the good; it forms a different wedge — an act oriented toward another’s harm, toward the deprivation and fragmentation of someone else. This is no longer a zero; it is a positive act with a product, and the product is the injury of another. By E2 it is a vessel — a built thing, oriented against others, which must therefore be actively maintained. The type-axis runs from the un-formed good (omission) to the formed harm (commission), from withholding to building-against.
Degree — the Tuesday to the fallen city. The second axis is magnitude: the amplitude of the act, its continuity over time, and its scope across persons. A single lapse of low intensity touching no one is small; an orientation held at full strength, sustained for years, spanning a nation is catastrophic. In E2’s terms, degree is the size of the vessel that must be built and maintained — a momentary omission is no vessel at all; a civilizational evil is a vast one, propped against Time at enormous cost. Degree is how large and how long, not how active.
The two axes are independent, and the independence matters. A vice can be active and small (a single, deliberate cruelty), or passive and catastrophic (the accumulated omissions that let a civilization fall, no one act of harm among them, only the not-doing piled to ruin), or active and catastrophic (the maintained regime of harm, commission at the scale of a continent). The refused shock is the origin corner — passive, small. The willful direction toward evil is the far corner — active, catastrophic. The interval is the whole field between, and most lives travel some distance into it.
The three slopes
Each bivector-vice is a trajectory across that field, and the framework’s three cases run differently, which is itself the lesson.
Cowardice slides down the type-axis. It begins as shirking — the withheld wedge, pure omission, the good-and-true known and not enacted (E3). Held and fed, it does not stay an omission. It acquires a vessel and turns active: the man who would not act to protect now acts to protect himself by another — puts someone else in the danger first, sends the other ahead, arranges that the cost he would not pay is paid by a body that is not his. Shirking at the top; others in the crosshairs before you at the bottom. The cosmic maximum is exactly this corner — the rebel who told the angels to go before him — and it is active commission against others, even though it began as a single refusal to step forward.
Excess slides down the type-axis too. It begins as the lack of frugality — over-consumption that harms no one but the H₄₈-saturated soul itself (E4), the will turned from catching to having. Held and fed, the having is not satisfied by what is freely available; it turns active and takes. At the bottom it is the deprivation of others of life, liberty, and property — not merely the failure to be temperate but the building of a vessel that strips others to feed the saturation. Over-having at the top; actively taking at the bottom.
Sloth slides down the degree-axis. This one is different, and the difference is the warning. Sloth’s worst form is not, primarily, a turn to active harm; it is the same omission, accumulated to catastrophe. It begins as a lazy Tuesday afternoon — one withheld bivector of work, trivial in degree, harming nothing. But the work it withholds is maintenance, and E2 has already shown that the good rests on a ground that holds it only while the vessels of order are kept up. Omission compounds: the gate not mended, the watch not kept, the institution not tended, each lapse small, the sum a civilization with the barbarians already inside it — not because anyone built an evil, but because everyone declined, in their small instance, to do the upkeep that holds the good in place. Sloth proves the second axis alone can be lethal: a vice that never once turns active can still, by degree, end a world.
Why it must be caught at the top
The reason the interval is one interval, and not two unrelated things, is the reason James gives it: the lust, the sin, the death are one growth, and what differs along it is type and degree, not kind. The willful direction toward evil at the bottom of the slope is the refused shock at the top, un-arrested — fed by a will that kept its orientation when the coherence-shock that would have integrated it was, again and again, declined. No one begins at the far corner; every active catastrophe began as a passive omission that was not caught, and walked down one or both axes under the continued pressure of a will turned from Φ. This is also why it can be caught, and where: at the top, while it is still a refused shock and not yet a vessel — before it has turned active and before it has acquired degree — when reversing it costs only the taking of the shock that was on offer all along. The mathematics of the interval is finally a piece of mercy: it locates the cheap place to stop, which is the early one, and it shows that the expensive places — the crosshairs, the deprivation, the fallen city — are the same vice, only later.
The answer to all three: catching
The slope has a top, and what reverses it at the top has a name. All three vices that descend it are one failure seen three ways — the failure to catch: cowardice is the orientation toward the known good refused at the threshold of cost; excess is the orientation captured by H₄₈ and unable to turn; sloth is that orientation too weak to hold, and overwork the same orientation held at full strength but aimed the wrong way. So the cure is one thing, not three. It is catching — the volitional turn of the being toward Φ-proximate content, received and made part of it — which is, precisely, the shock the refused-shock vices decline. To catch is to take the input the inverted octave refuses: the wedge formed where the coward withheld it, the will turned where the glutton was saturated, the work held where the slothful let it lapse and aimed where the overworker missed.
Catching is a single act in three stages — orientation (the volitional disposition of the being’s eigenstate selection toward Φ-proximate content, amplifying the GNST’s measure toward the higher-τ region), reception (the actualization, when the selection lands in the region the orientation made probable), and composition (the integration of the received content into the being’s structure, without which what is received dissipates back to Φ′ and leaves no trace) — and it is defined formally in Paper A7: The Resurrection (Scripture’s καταλαμβάνω, to lay hold of). It is named here only to say the thing the whole interval was built to point at: that the answer to the entire slope, from the smallest refused shock to the willful direction toward evil, is not a different remedy at each station but the one turn, taken — and taken most cheaply at the top, which is why the vice must be caught there. (Provisional placement: this may sit better later in the octave; carried here for now, since “caught at the top” is where it first earns its name.)
