Confucius — The Analects
The Analects — the recorded sayings of Kong Qiu and his disciples — are read here for a single sustained achievement: the most complete account in the ancient world of how the virtues are built in a person through practice and relation, written almost entirely in the pastoral, practical register the framework reserves for its Volume G. Confucius does no metaphysics; he describes the making of a junzi, the fully developed person, with the operational precision of a teacher who has watched it happen.
Ren — benevolence, human-heartedness — is the inner product read laterally: the orientation toward the other that does not depend on the other’s usefulness, agape named in the key of the Chinese family. Li — ritual propriety — is the noise-floor discipline: the ordered forms that, practised until they are second nature, hold a person’s attention in the right place so that ren can operate. Confucius’ insistence that li without ren is empty and ren without li is formless is the exact relation of practice and orientation that Volume G works out — the form is the trellis, the love is the vine.
The famous self-account — “at fifteen I set my heart on learning… at seventy I could follow what my heart desired without overstepping the line” — is one of the clearest descriptions of the whole ascending career on record: the decades-long building of a self until right action is no longer a constraint imposed on appetite but the very shape of appetite — Mode 5 and beyond, the deposit crystallised, the virtue become the self rather than its discipline. And the Silver Rule — “do not impose on others what you do not desire” — is the inner product stated as a maxim, the same structure as the Golden Rule reached by an independent tradition.
Confidence: concordance — ren as lateral ⟨·,·⟩, li as noise-floor discipline, the seventy-years saying as the ascending career; strong convergence with Volume G (Face C1). Messenger: the Analects were compiled by disciples over generations; the voice is the school’s memory of the master, already filtered.
